Hǎo Hǎidōng 郝海东
Hao Haidong (b. May 5, 1970) is a retired soccer player for China’s national team. In 2020 he was banned from the Chinese internet after publicly criticizing the Chinese Communist Party.
Hao played professional soccer from the 1980s to 2000s. In 2002, he led China’s national soccer team to their first, and only, World Cup appearance. He is known to be outspoken about the mismanagement of professional sports and other social issues in China.
During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Hao publicly supported author Fang Fang, who was attacked by nationalist internet users after publishing her journal of life in Wuhan under quarantine. On May 7, Hao called those defending Chinese government’s COVID-19 response “fifty-centers,” “lackeys” and “eunuchs.” On June 4, Hao was censored in China after appearing on exiled tycoon Guo Wengui’s YouTube channel to declare his opposition to the CCP, announcing that he was teaming up with Guo and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon to create the “New Federal State of China.”
Hao currently lives in Spain his wife Ye Zhaoying, a former world champion of badminton who is also an outspoken critic of the CCP.
