“Fitting shoe” (合鞋 hé xié), [http://chinadigitaltimes.net/space/River_crab yet another] homonym for “[[harmonious]]” (和谐 héxié), has its roots in a speech delivered by President Xi Jinping that met much netizen ridicule.

In [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgIdvlSOBhA his speech] [zh] [http://www.gov.cn/ldhd/2013-03/24/content_2360829.htm (transcript)] [zh], Xi [https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2013/03/xi-jinping-calls-for-cooperation-on-visit-to-moscow/ called for cooperation between Russia and China], emphasizing the two nations’ shared interests in peace and stability. Xi also countered international criticism of other nations’ developmental paths:
