Magical measurement of the national rejuvenation.
On August 3, 2012, Yang Yiyong, Chair of the National Development and Reform Commission Academy of Macroeconomic Research, announced that "the Chinese national rejuvenation was 62% complete as of 2010" according to his "quantitative measures." Rejuvenation slowed from 3.34% per year between 2005 and 2010 to 1.3% from 2011 to 2012, reaching 65.3% by 2012, according to Yang.
Netizens proceeded to crack jokes and wondered if Yang had been compensated coming up with this fantastic number. Yang told the Fujian news site Dongnanwang that he hadn't spent any government funds on the research, but also that in 2005 he had reported a 46% completion rate for the national rejuvenation to his superiors, which they deemed "too low."
Yang's quantification of national rejuvenation has inspired netizens to draw comparisons to installing software and charging batteries:
Baquanbijisi (@爸权夶祭司): I'm really a very patriotic person. Every time my cell phone battery is at sixty-two percent, I charge it, because I'm afraid that if I don't charge it immediately the rate of Chinese national rejuvenation will fall below this number. Now wouldn't that suck? (April 19, 2016)
我其实是一个非常爱国的人。每次我手机电池电量到了百分之六十二的时候,我都会立刻开始充电,生怕因为充电不及时导致中华民族伟大复兴进度条跌落到这个水平以下,那岂不是太操蛋了。[Chinese]
Xi Jinping has often invoked national rejuvenation and the Chinese dream since taking office as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in November 2012 and as President of the People's Republic of China in March 2013.
