Ai Weiwei once tweeted, "If you hope to understand your motherland, then you have already entered the path of breaking the law" (你如果希望了解你的祖国,你已经走上了犯罪的道路). The implication is that in order to truly understand China, you need access to censored or suppressed material—the Chinese Communist Party does not really want you to understand.
