Wall nation

墙国 (Qiángguó): Wall Nation

In Mandarin, “Wall Nation” sounds the same as “mighty nation” (强国 qiáng guó). There is much talk in China about becoming “a mighty nation” and rising up after years of foreign aggression. The term “wall nation” pokes fun at these nationalistic aspirations by suggesting that China is not becoming “mighty” so much as it is becoming “walled” in by the Great Firewall of China. The word “wall” has been used to the same effect in other words containing the character for “strong.”
